I’ve been in the business for a long time now, so my training as a quantity surveyor was a traditional one. Back then, we’d take dimensions manually and hand-write bills to send off to the typist to be cut into stencils and printed.

I’ve acted as surveyor for everything from Metropolitan police stations to Methodist churches over the years, as well as managing the maintenance and refurbishment of major buildings. Working on a steel mezzanine for the Victoria and Albert Museum has to be a highlight.

A traditional knowledge of construction is key, as is an eye for detail. In the morning I might be advising on a legal issue around a lease or boundary, before heading out to inspect a leaking roof in the afternoon.
